The power behind our team of eye doctors is that we offer a variety of training and skill sets, from pediatric and developmental optometry to geriatric ocular disease; we have a very capable team, built to suit your needs!

David Czerny, OD

David Czerny is proud to have been raised in the Northern Black Hills, and very excited to return home to live and work here. After graduating from Sturgis High School, he attended Black Hills State University where he pole vaulted for the BHSU track and field team. After BHSU, Dr. Czerny graduated from the Michigan College of Optometry with high distinction.

Dr. Dave loves helping people and truly cares for his patients. You can be certain that Dr. Dave will treat you as if you were a life-long friend or family member.

Dr. Dave has attained knowledge of the latest treatment options available in optometry for a wide variety of ocular conditions. He has competed internship training at the following sites:

Fort Meade VA, with training in:
Management of diabetic eye disease, dry eye, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma

Michigan State Neuro-Opthalmology, with training in:
complex neurologic disorders, and their impact on the visual system,

Eaton Rapids Optometry, with training in:
pediatric vision care, developmental vision, contact Lens fitting, vision therapy, primary care optometry, and co-management of ocular surgeries

Lansing Ophthalmology, with training in:
contact lens fitting, primary care optometry and co-management of ocular surgeries

Jessica R. Czerny, O.D.

Jessica is excited to be back in Spearfish, where she graduated from Spearfish High School and attended Black Hills State for her undergraduate work. She is proud to say she is both a Spartan and a Yellow Jacket. She graduated from the Michigan College of Optometry with highest distinction as Valedictorian, and now is excited to be back in the beautiful Black Hills to practice. She will provide full scope optometric services.

Dr. Jess is nearly finished with her second degree in veterinary medicine! As a dual doctor in veterinary medicine and optometry, her impressive background gives her a strong understanding of how the body works and how your eyes are a window to your overall health. She enjoys educating people on how they can improve their vision and health through nutritional and life style counseling. She enjoys human and animal health care and plans to use both backgrounds for the rest of her career.

In her free time she loves dancing, cooking, and enjoying the outdoors with her husband Dave and their dog Elly. Her favorite outdoor activities include hiking, wake-boarding, mountain biking, and snowboarding.

She has completed training at the following sites:

Black Hills Regional Eye Institute, with training in:
LASIK co-management, primary care, contact lenses, management of a wide variety of eye disease, from uveitis to diabetes, and many more.

Grand Rapids Veterans Hospital, with training in:
Management of diabetic eye disease, dry eye, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and other eye diseases.

Michael J. Guilbert, OD

Dr. Guilbert has been practicing Optometry for 37 year. He graduated from Indiana University School of Optometry in 1971. He is married to Susan. He has 3 daughters, 3 sons-in-law and he has 5 grandchildren.

Kami Serfling, OD

In order to keep up with patient demand, we are excited to announce that we have added another doctor to our team! It has not been a short or easy task, but after careful consideration we have selected Dr. Kami Serfling as our new associate in 2016. She is compassionate, friendly, and extremely competent in the field of eye disease and vision correction. She enjoys getting to know her patients and helping them achieve the best vision for their occupation and hobbies. Dr. Kami is proud to have spent time working with our US veterans in the VA medical system, during her time working at the VA hospital she gained valuable experience with a primarily older population learning how to diagnose and treat many ocular diseases including macular degeneration and cataracts. Dr. Kami attended the Michigan College of Optometry, where she graduated with high distinction in 2011. She and her husband have 3 children and they love spending time reading, cooking and enjoying all that the Black Hills have to offer. She is looking forward to serving our local communities!

Visiting Ophthalmologist

Dr. Stephen Khachikian

Dr. Khachikian is an ophthalmologist from Black Hills Regional Eye Institute in Rapid City, SD. As a service to our patients he comes to Deadwood monthly to see patients who would otherwise need to travel to Rapid City. Dr. Khachikian has performed extensive clinical research in the areas of keratoconus, corneal topography and endothelial keratoplasty. Dr. Khachikian specializes in all forms of corneal transplantation and regularly performs refractive and cataract surgery including the use of toric and multifocal intraocular lenses.

Samantha Burleson

Samantha is a Technician & Optician and handles our Optical Marketing. Samantha and her husband, Jarred, have two children named Johnathan and Joshua. they both have been foster parents since 2017. Samantha graduated from Black Hills State University with an associate of Arts Degree in 2017. Samantha has had numerous hours of training as a technician and in optical. Samantha is very committed to our community and youth. She serves on several youth boards along with volunteer coaching throughout the year. Samantha is a huge supporter of our local Boys and Girls Club and is very passionate about American Sign Language where she has received awards through the South Dakota Board of Regions. Samantha enjoys hiking, camping and spending as much time as possible with her family. Samantha has chosen a career in optical because there is always more to learn in an environment that is always changing.

Ashley Spargur

Ashley is our Billing & Insurance Specialist/Project Coordinator. Ashley grew up here in the beautiful Black Hills. She graduated from Black Hills State University with Magna Cum Laude honors in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a minor in Accounting & Management. Ashley has had training as a technician, optical and is very fluent in navigating through Insurance questions. She also takes on projects to keep the office cutting edge and helps with community outreach projects. Ashley is very passionate about her family and enjoys spending time with her two sisters, Katilin and Lanae. She loves to hike and visit family in Arizona.

Dianna Sjomeling

Dianna is our Head Optician. Dianna and her husband Steve have two children, Jerry & Jason, one daughter-in-law, Celena and two amazing grandchildren, Levi & Erika. She enjoys baking, watching and supporting her grandchildren in numerous activities and making magnificent quilts which she donates to local nursing homes for cancer patients. Dianna has been with Deadwood Eyecare for twenty-six years; sixteen of those she has been ABO Certified as an Optician. Prior to working at Deadwood Eyecare, Dianna graduated Black Hills State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and Special Education with a certification in middle school math.

Sheri Williams

Sheri is a Technician and Contact Lens Specialist. Sheri and her husband Bubba are both Lead-Deadwood alumni. They have two sons, Tyler and Gage. Sheri has had training as a technician, in optical and in contact lenses. She enjoys supporting her children along with her nieces Kaylee and Izzy in numerous activities throughout the year. Sherri enjoys camping, cooking/BBQ, photography and looking at the moon through her telescope.
